Silence Encourages the Tormentor, Never the Tormented

Question: If you consistently outperform the market, if your fund beats the Street every year, but you do not promote your results — despite the need to attract new investors — how, may I ask, do you intend to achieve your goals while saying, and doing, nothing?

Do you think potential investors will scour The Wall Street Journal, lowering a ruler to run below and parallel to the published reports of your quarterly returns; and, in the midst of this financial epiphany, say to themselves, “This is the fund I must own”?

Please.

Unless you communicate with the public — unless you distinguish yourself from the competition in words and deeds — no one will find you, no one will call you and no one will invest with you.

In other words, silence is not an option.

Without the combined tools of investor relations and media relations, your performance is like that tree in the forest — transformed into a green pixel, a stationary figure that does not flash or burn itself onto the screen of a smartphone or tablet, fading or falling without even a whimper in the much larger environment beyond that enclosed section of spruce, pine, mahogany and maple.

And, without reverting to melodrama and appropriating the rhetorical catchphrase which asserts silence equals death, I say — simply and candidly — that silence will not produce success.

To grow, you need advisers.

End the silence.
